Club Projects
Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maryland, Bayside Unit
Soon after the Club was founded the members began looking for a signature project. It did not take long before we realized that the youth were in need of after school activities. The percentage of home alone was high in the twin beach area due to the long commute to Washington DC and Baltimore. The common interest in most of the youth was learning computer skills ... so we started a computer club. Initially we started with 5 to 10 youth but after about a year it had grown to over 65 youth. Actually to many for the Club to handle. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America asked if we were interested in merging our programs. We agreed that would be best for the program and the youth and the clubs merged. We continued to support the Club with a number of members serving on the B&GCSM Board of Directors, financially supporting the Bayside Unit, and helping raise the funds for a New Building. The building became our Rotary Centennial Project and was completed in October 2008 and opened in January 2009. For more information go to link B&GCSM, Bayside Unit.

Provide Dictionaries to Elementary School Students
The Goal of The District Dictionary Project is to distribute a free dictionary to each third grade student in the public schools of Rotary District 7620 in the fall of 2009 (An estimated 70,000 dictionaries). The District Dictionary Project is a collaborative effort among the District 7620 member clubs, public school systems of Maryland (twelve counties on the western shore) and
Washington, DC, and, the business community where applicable.
On October 13, 14, and 15 our Club distributed 631 dictionaries to the third grade students and teachers at the following elementary schools: Beach, Huntingtown, Mr. Harmony, Plum Point, Sunderland, and Windy Hill. Pat Tyndall was the Club Coordinator, Renee O'Brien and Joyce Pfanschmidt made the presentation, and Phil Pfanschmidt helped distribute the dictionaries. The students were very proud to have their own dictionary and extremely thankful for the gift. At every school, the most common question from the students was: "Do I get to keep this?"

Each year we help support the Rotary District Scholarships offered to students at Gallaudet University.
Youth Mentoring Program
We actually started what eventually became the B&GCSM, Bayside Unit with a youth mentoring program. At the time the youth were not receiving much training in computers. Rotary members stepped forward and helped fill the gap. We tought the youth basic computer skills and how to build computers. Today, we continue the progarm at the B&GC but have upgraded the program to provide training in Instructional Technology. We call the progam TECH SQUAD.
