Dictionary Project
We delivered 648 dictionaries to the third grade students at Beach Elementary, Huntingtown Elementary, Mount Harmony Elementary, Plum Point Elementary, Sunderland Elementary, and Windy Hill Elementary schools. The Third Graders were surprisingly excited and enthusiastic about having their very own dictionaries, and FREE at that. Some comments were:
Do I get to keep it?
Nobody has ever given us anything before.
It is very nice of you.
Your are great, kind, and good people.
It was gratifying to get feedback that the dictionary had become a family activity. The family wished they could have such a wonderful dictionary. The students were looking forward to sharing with their brothers and sisters.
They referred to it as the "good book", wonderful, super awesome, cool, marvelous, extraordinary, fantastic, brilliant, and versatile. The best they havd ever seen! Using it for the usual spelling but also to play fake school and computer spelling games.
I will use it "wisely"!
I'm glad you came by ... I loved you coming ... please come back again.
I appreciate you caring about me, you make me feel special.
I like the Rotary Club.
The longest word seemed to be their favorite ... followed by sign language and Braille which they wanted to learn more about. The planets and maps were also favorites.
At one school each member was given a word for the student to lookup. It was interesting to note of the 100 youth that picked out a word to highlight; no one picked the same word. Also, some of the classes sent up thank you notes. Some expressed their artisitc talents by decorating the letters and envelopes. Whenever one had any doubts about the future they only need to read these letters. These students are very special and have what it takes to make the world a better place. They are Caring, Compassionate, and have Enthusiasm for for Learning! The following are quotes from their thank you letters.
I can use it at school and home.
When Mom and my sister ask me a word I can look it up for them.
I can find words I don't know how to spell.
I can find where I live.
I can use it for my math.
I can use it to play school with my friends.
I like having my very own dictionary to myself but I will share it with my sister.
It will help me with my writing projects.
Thank you so much, it's the best, I got to finish my home work quickly and go to play out side for a long time.
Now I can make long stretched out sentences like my brother and I think he would like it to. I love it!
They usually signed the letters, Your Friend.
Below are some of the pictures taken when distributing the dictionaries.
